The Kingdom

A country that measures success in happiness.

Bhutan is a small Buddhist kingdom in the eastern Himalayas, tucked between Tibet and the plains of India. It opened to outside visitors in 1974 and still receives fewer travellers in a year than Venice sees in a week.

The country is governed by Gross National Happiness — a development index that weighs the wellbeing of its people, forests and culture above GDP. Bhutan is the only carbon-negative country in the world. Dzongs (fortress monasteries) anchor every valley, the national dress is still worn to work and to court, and the only traffic lights in the capital are waved by a policeman.

Why Bhutan Tourism Board

A Bhutanese family operator — eighteen years on the same trails.

We're a small, licensed team based in Thimphu. Everything we plan is private, led by Bhutanese guides, and built around what you actually want from this trip. No groups, no scripts, no middlemen.

  • Private trips, always. One vehicle, one guide, one set of travellers. You set the pace, not a coach group.
  • Licensed by the Department of Tourism. Operator licence #2547 — required for every Bhutan trip, and a guarantee of standards.
  • One contact, end to end. The person who answers your enquiry plans your trip and meets you at Paro airport.
  • Free trip planning. No fees to design your itinerary or get a custom quote. You pay only when you confirm.

Six of our most-asked-for trips. Each one is a starting point — we'll customise the days, hotels and pace around what you actually want.

Ways into Bhutan

Four entry points to a small country.

Pick the door that fits — every one of our trips starts as one of these and ends as something more specific.

“Sometimes the most important moment of the day is sitting in a courtyard, drinking butter tea, and listening.”

A cultural journey through Bhutan moves at the pace of village life. You visit fortress-monasteries, meet families who have lived in these valleys for generations, share meals in farmhouses, and slowly learn what a Vajrayana Buddhist country feels like up close. Most routes cover Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha; longer ones reach into the central Bumthang plateau.

  • Visits to working dzongs across the western and central valleys
  • Meals and conversations with Bhutanese families in their homes
  • Quiet morning time inside monasteries before the crowds arrive
  • A guided climb to Paro Taktsang, the cliffside Tiger's Nest monastery
